  • 1 pound 450 g large shrimp (16/20 count), shell-on, deveined
  • teaspoons kosher salt
  • 6 ounces non-alcoholic malt beverage or chicken broth
  • 2 garlic cloves thinly sliced
  • ½ cup unsalted butter softened and cut into pieces
  • ¼ cup fresh harissa paste
  • ¼ cup dried harissa seasoning
  • Crusty bread for serving
  • Fresh parsley optional garnish
  • Lemon wedges for serving

Instructions

  • Preheat the broiler to high and place a foil-lined baking sheet or large cast-iron skillet under the broiler to heat.
  • Toss the shrimp with kosher salt and set aside.
  • In a small saucepan over medium-high heat, combine the non-alcoholic malt beverage (or chicken broth) and garlic.
  • Simmer until reduced to about 3 tablespoons and slightly syrupy, about 5 minutes.
  • Reduce the heat to low and add the butter one piece at a time, whisking continuously until smooth and emulsified.
  • Remove from the heat and stir in both the fresh harissa paste and dried harissa seasoning.
  • Pour the harissa butter sauce over the shrimp and toss until evenly coated.
  • Carefully spread the shrimp in a single layer on the hot baking sheet or skillet.
  • Broil for about 4 minutes, or until the shrimp are opaque and cooked through.
  • Serve the Quick Broiled Shrimp With Harissa Recipe immediately with crusty bread and fresh lemon wedges.

Notes

  • Serve with toasted artisan bread to soak up the flavorful butter sauce.
  • Steamed rice, couscous, or roasted vegetables also make excellent side dishes.
  • For a milder version, reduce the dried harissa seasoning.
