- 1 16-ounce package penne pasta (about 4 cups)
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 teaspoons minced garlic
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 cup milk
- 1 cup chicken broth
- 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 2 teaspoons dried parsley
- Garlic salt with parsley flakes or salt to taste
- Pepper to taste
- ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese or additional Parmesan optional

In a large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute.
Stir in flour and cook continuously for another minute.
Gradually add milk and chicken broth, stirring constantly until the sauce thickens (about 5 minutes).
Add Parmesan cheese, parsley, garlic salt, and pepper. Stir until smooth and melted.
Add cooked pasta to the sauce and mix well to coat evenly.
Stir in mozzarella cheese if using, until melted and creamy.
