Ingredients

For the Dough

  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 2 large eggs
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt

For the Filling

  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese shredded
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese shredded
  • ½ cup Parmesan cheese grated
  • 1 tablespoon fresh Italian herbs basil, oregano, thyme
  • 2 cloves garlic grated

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm milk, active dry yeast, and honey. Let the mixture rest for 5–10 minutes until bubbly and frothy.
  • Add the eggs, flour, and kosher salt. Knead using a dough hook for 4–5 minutes until the dough becomes smooth and elastic.
  • Cover the bowl with a clean towel and let the dough rise for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  • In a separate bowl, combine the cheddar, mozzarella, Parmesan, herbs, and grated garlic.
  • Roll the dough into a 12x18-inch rectangle on a lightly floured surface. Evenly sprinkle the cheese mixture over the dough.
  • Roll the dough tightly into a log. Slice the log lengthwise into two halves.
  • Twist the two halves together, keeping the cut sides facing upward to reveal the cheesy layers. Coil the twisted dough onto a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  • Let the Swirled Garlic Herb and Cheese Bread rise again for 15 minutes.
  • Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30–35 minutes until deeply golden brown and cooked through.
  • Allow the bread to cool slightly before slicing and serving warm.

Notes

  • Gruyère, provolone, or Monterey Jack cheese work beautifully in this recipe.
