Ingredients

  • ½ pound fresh strawberries stems removed
  • cups granulated sugar
  • –5 cups water divided
  • cups freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • Ice cubes for serving
  • Fresh lemon slices optional
  • Fresh strawberries for garnish optional
  • Fresh mint leaves optional

Instructions

  • Wash the strawberries thoroughly and remove the stems.
  • Blend the strawberries until completely smooth using a blender or food processor.
  • For a smoother drink, strain the strawberry puree through a fine-mesh sieve to remove the seeds.
  • In a small saucepan, combine the sugar with 2 cups of water.
  • Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally until the sugar completely dissolves and the mixture comes to a gentle boil.
  • Remove from the heat and allow the simple syrup to cool to room temperature.
  • Strain the freshly squeezed lemon juice into a large 2-quart pitcher.
  • Add the cooled simple syrup and strawberry puree to the pitcher.
  • Stir well until fully combined.
  • Refrigerate until thoroughly chilled.
  • Just before serving, add 2½ cups of cold water and stir.
  • Taste the Strawberry Lemonade and add additional water if you prefer a lighter flavor.
  • Fill serving glasses with ice and pour over the chilled lemonade.
  • Garnish with fresh strawberries, lemon slices, or mint if desired.

Notes

For an extra-refreshing presentation, garnish each glass with lemon wheels, fresh strawberries, and mint leaves.
You can substitute honey or maple syrup for part of the sugar if desired, though the flavor will change slightly.
This recipe also works wonderfully with frozen strawberries when fresh berries are out of season.
