Ingredients

  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup shredded pepper jack cheese
  • 1/3 cup finely chopped onion
  • 2 garlic cloves finely minced
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1 jalapeño pepper finely diced
  • 2 teaspoons halal-certified Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 pounds 93% lean ground turkey
  • 6 slices pepper jack cheese optional

For serving:

  • 6 hamburger buns
  • Sliced jalapeños
  • Spicy mayo
  • Guacamole
  • Sliced tomato
  • Lettuce

Instructions

  • Add the egg, shredded pepper jack, onion, garlic, cilantro, jalapeño, Worcestershire sauce, salt, smoked paprika, cumin, and black pepper to a large mixing bowl. Whisk or stir until combined.
  • Add the ground turkey. Gently mix with a spatula, wooden spoon, or clean hands just until the ingredients are evenly incorporated. Avoid overworking the meat.
  • Divide the mixture into 6 equal portions and form each into a thick, compact patty. Make a shallow indentation in the center of each burger with your thumb to encourage even cooking.
  • Arrange the patties on a parchment-lined plate or baking sheet. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. This helps the Jalapeño Pepper Jack Turkey Burgers hold their shape and allows the seasonings to develop.
  • Lightly oil the grill grates and preheat the grill to high heat.
  • Place the chilled patties on the hot grill. Close the lid and cook for about 5 minutes.
  • Flip carefully and continue grilling for approximately 3–5 minutes, or until the center of each burger reaches 165°F (74°C).
  • If using additional pepper jack cheese, place one slice on each patty during the final 30–60 seconds of cooking and allow it to melt.
  • Rest the burgers briefly, then place them on hamburger buns and add your favorite toppings. Serve immediately.

Notes

For stovetop Jalapeño Pepper Jack Turkey Burgers, heat about 1 tablespoon of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the chilled patties for approximately 5 minutes on the first side. Flip, cover, and cook another 4–5 minutes or until they reach 165°F (74°C).
For the oven, arrange the patties on a lined baking sheet and bake at 375°F (190°C) for approximately 20–25 minutes, checking the internal temperature before serving.
Guacamole pairs particularly well with the spicy pepper jack and jalapeño. For a fresher burger, add crisp lettuce, ripe tomato, red onion, and sliced avocado.
