Ingredients

For the Chicken

  • 6 boneless skinless chicken breasts

For the Honey BBQ Sauce

  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • ¾ cup ketchup
  • ½ cup apple cider vinegar
  • ¼ cup packed brown sugar
  • ¼ cup honey
  • 3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 2 teaspoons soy sauce
  • ½ teaspoon chili powder

Instructions

  • Step 1: Make the Honey BBQ Sauce
  • Heat the vegetable oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
  • Add the minced garlic and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant.
  • Stir in the ketchup, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, honey, Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, soy sauce, and chili powder.
  • Bring the mixture to a gentle boil.
  • Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens slightly.
  • Remove from the heat.
  • Transfer about half of the sauce to a separate bowl for basting the chicken. Reserve the remaining sauce for serving.
  • Step 2: Prepare the Chicken
  • Pat the chicken breasts dry with paper towels.
  • If needed, lightly pound the thicker ends so each breast cooks evenly.
  • Season both sides lightly with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
  • Step 3: Grill the Chicken
  • Preheat the grill to medium-high heat (about 400°F / 205°C).
  • Lightly oil the grill grates to prevent sticking.
  • Place the chicken on the grill.
  • Cook for 7–10 minutes on the first side.
  • Flip only once and continue cooking another 7–10 minutes.
  • Brush generously with the reserved basting sauce every 3–4 minutes while grilling.
  • Cook until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).
  • Step 4: Rest and Serve
  • Transfer the chicken to a serving platter.
  • Let it rest for 5 minutes before serving.
  • Serve with the reserved Honey BBQ Sauce on the side for dipping or drizzling

Notes

  • Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 25–30 minutes if you don't have a grill.
  • The homemade Honey BBQ Sauce also works well on ribs, burgers, meatballs, and grilled vegetables.
  • For extra caramelization, brush on one final layer of sauce during the last minute of cooking.
  • Garnish with chopped parsley or green onions before serving.
