Ingredients

For the Steak

  • - 2 pounds flank steak halal-certified
  • - 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
  • - 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
  • - 2 tablespoons alcohol-free balsamic vinegar
  • - 1 shallot thinly sliced
  • - 6 garlic cloves chopped
  • - 1 teaspoon honey
  • - 1 tablespoon dried oregano
  • - 1 teaspoon salt or to taste
  • - 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • - 1/4 teaspoon red chili flakes optional

For the Herby Rice

  • - 3 cups cooked basmati rice
  • - 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • - 1/2 cup fresh basil chopped
  • - 1/4 cup fresh cilantro chopped
  • - 2 tablespoons fresh dill chopped
  • - 2 teaspoons fresh lemon zest
  • - 1 garlic clove finely chopped
  • - 1 ripe avocado sliced
  • - Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Step 1: Prepare the Steak Marinade
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine olive oil, fresh lemon juice, alcohol-free balsamic vinegar, sliced shallot, chopped garlic, honey, dried oregano, salt, black pepper, and chili flakes.
  • Whisk until everything is well combined.
  • Step 2: Marinate the Steak
  • Add the flank steak to the marinade and turn it several times to coat evenly.
  • Cover and refrigerate for 20 minutes if time allows. For a quicker meal, proceed directly to cooking.
  • Step 3: Cook the Steak
  • Heat a large cast-iron skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat.
  • Remove the steak from the marinade, allowing excess liquid to drip off.
  • Place the steak in the hot skillet and cook for approximately 5–8 minutes per side, depending on thickness and your preferred doneness.
  • For food-safety guidance, cook whole-cut beef to an internal temperature of 145°F (63°C), followed by a 3-minute rest.
  • Step 4: Rest and Slice
  • Transfer the cooked steak to a cutting board.
  • Allow it to rest for 5–10 minutes so the juices can redistribute throughout the meat.
  • Using a sharp knife, slice the steak thinly against the grain for the most tender texture.
  • Step 5: Prepare the Sauce
  • Transfer the leftover marinade to a small saucepan.
  • Bring it to a full, rolling boil before reducing the heat. Simmer for 5–10 minutes until slightly thickened.
  • Because the marinade has touched raw beef, it must be thoroughly boiled before being used as a sauce. Alternatively, reserve a portion of the marinade before adding the raw steak and use that for the sauce.
  • Step 6: Make the Herby Rice
  • Place the warm cooked basmati rice in a large bowl.
  • Add olive oil, chopped basil, cilantro, dill, lemon zest, and finely chopped garlic.
  • Toss gently until the rice is evenly coated with the fragrant herb mixture.
  • Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
  • Step 7: Assemble the Bowls
  • Divide the herby rice evenly among four serving bowls.
  • Arrange the sliced steak over the rice, then add fresh avocado slices.
  • Spoon the warm lemon-garlic sauce over the steak.
  • Your Herby Lemon Garlic Steak Rice Bowl is ready to serve with a beautiful combination of tender beef, fragrant herbs, and refreshing citrus flavor.

Notes

  • Protein alternatives: Substitute halal-certified chicken breast, chicken thighs, or lamb for a different flavor. Adjust cooking times to the protein and its safe internal temperature.
  • Rice alternatives: Brown rice, jasmine rice, or quinoa can replace basmati rice.
  • Extra vegetables: Add cherry tomatoes, sliced cucumbers, baby spinach, or roasted bell peppers.
  • Creamy topping: A spoonful of plain Greek yogurt mixed with lemon juice makes a refreshing optional sauce.
  • Avocado substitute: Try hummus or a spoonful of tahini sauce.
  • Serving suggestion: Pair this Mediterranean steak bowl with a cucumber salad, roasted vegetables, or warm flatbread.
