Ingredients

For the Beignets:

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 3 tablespoons warm water
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour plus more for dusting
  • Vegetable oil for frying

For the Glaze:

  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

Step 1 – Activate the Yeast

  • In a small bowl, combine the active dry yeast and warm water. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until foamy and activated.

Step 2 – Prepare the Dough

  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together buttermilk, sugar, melted butter, egg, and salt. Add the yeast mixture and stir well. Gradually add flour, mixing until a soft dough forms. The dough will be slightly sticky, which is normal.

Step 3 – Let It Rise, Roll & Cut

  • Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a clean towel. Let the dough rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  • Lightly flour your work surface and roll the dough to about 1/4 inch thickness. Cut into 2-inch squares using a sharp knife or pizza cutter.

Step 4 – Fry the Beignets

  • Pour vegetable oil into a heavy-bottomed pot to about 2 inches deep. Heat oil to 350°F (175°C).
  • Carefully fry 3–4 beignets at a time for about 1 minute per side, until golden brown and puffed.
  • Remove and drain on paper towels.

Step 5 – Make the Glaze

  • In a bowl, whisk powdered sugar, buttermilk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Dip slightly warm beignets into the glaze or drizzle over the top. Allow glaze to set for a few minutes before serving.
  • These Easy Glazed Buttermilk Beignets are best enjoyed warm and fresh.

Notes

  • Serve with coffee or hot chocolate.
